Rey Mysterio should have done what Eddie Guerrero did years ago!

There would hardly be anyone who would have forgotten Eddie Guerrero's victory over Brock Lesnar to claim the now-defunct WWE Championship. It was a sight to behold. Eddie's celebrations after the win are one of the most iconic moments in the history of the business.

Today, WWE had another opportunity to recreate that magic by having Rey go over Brock. The ultimate underdog beating the Beast Incarnate would have become the talk of the town. It would have further solidified Mysterio's already firmly cemented legendary status and would have given Rey one last hoorah with a major championship before he hangs up his boots. But unfortunately, that didn't happen.

Rey Mysterio and his son Dominic hitting Brock Lesnar with a double 619.
Going into the event, this match was one of the best built up contests. It had an aura around it. The story was perfect - never mess with a man's family. It is fathomable that Rey beating Lesnar clean does not make sense. But the build-up towards the match and the match stipulation were all in line to give Rey a much needed big win after a lengthy lean patch. It would not have been a first if Brock was defeated with some outside help; John Cena, Triple H, Eddie Guerrero, Seth Rollins have all used more than just fists and legs to keep the Beast down for a three count. Interference from Dominic, use of a lead pipe, chair shots, and a double 619 from the father and son proved to be ineffective as the Beast ended the match with a single F5.

It was already against the concept of the pay-per-view that Brock Lesnar did not face Bray Wyatt and Adam Cole in a triple threat match. It is understandable that any one of them taking a clean loss would have hurt their credibility. WWE had to find a way out and hence, three separate matches - all of them predictably winning their respective matches. Though the WWE stands guilty of robbing people of a once in a lifetime match but having Rey go over the Beast Incarnate would have healed those wounds to some extent. It would have provided WWE with a newer and fresher path. With Dominic and Cain Velasquez also in the mix, this storyline had the potential to extend and excel.

Lesnar dominating his opponents in a one-sided fashion has become monotonous. Matches involving Lesnar have started to lack excitement. Mind you that Lesnar is not to be blamed for this, it is the creative staff. Lesnar has already shown, against AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan at previous editions of Survivor Series, that he can put up thrilling classic matches. Moreover, Lesnar is a legit fighter, with all the accolades and credentials to his name. He has an appeal. He doesn't need a belt around his waist to pull the crowd. His name is enough for that.

WWE must understand that the world of sports entertainment is scripted; it is out in the open now. Here, the pen is indeed mightier than the sword. With a proper vision, WWE can create unrealistic over-the-top moments. They have the power to do the unthinkable - anything that would not happen in the "real" world.

With high competition from AEW at the horizon and criticism of WWE's creative teams at an all-time high, WWE had a perfect chance to put a breath of fresh air in its otherwise predictable product. WWE should send the spectators with iconic jaw-dropping moments which would give them a reason to talk for years to come, like Brock beating the Deadman at Wrestlemania 30.

Having said that, this match had its moments. WWE planning that throwing of towel scenario was the ultimate dig at AEW. For me, Dominic and Rey trying together to keep Brock down for the pin would remain one of the best moments of the show.
